How to Choose the Best Courses and Extracurriculars to Take in College in Five Simple Steps Powered by 24/7 Teach

With so many options available, it can be challenging to know where to start with your college course schedule. However, taking the time to carefully consider your interests and goals can help you make the most of your college experience. In this blog post, we'll explore some tips for choosing the right courses and extracurriculars in university.

How Do I Create a Good Course Schedule?

#1: Consider your major

Start by selecting courses that align with your major. This will help you build a solid foundation in your field of study and ensure you're on track to graduate on time. Check your degree requirements and take the necessary prerequisite classes at the beginning of your undergraduate career. Depending on the number of credit hours needed for your degree, you may want to complete your prerequisites before the end of your sophomore year.

#2: Think about your career goals

Consider what you want to do after graduation and choose courses that will prepare you for that career path. Look for courses that offer practical skills and real-world experience. Every school should have descriptions of the course and professor. Research online to see reviews of the class and professor, and possibly even reach out. Enrolling in a class can also build your relationship with faculty and open up possible undergraduate opportunities.

#3: Consult with your academic advisor

Your academic advisor can help you navigate course requirements and provide guidance on what classes to take. They can also help you explore different majors and minors. Discuss with your advisor on whether you are on track to graduate, and what is missing from your schedule. Advisors generally have more expertise in what past students have done in scheduling, so asking them would be extremely beneficial.

#4: Research the course syllabus

Take the time to review the course syllabus and requirements to ensure that the course meets your expectations and aligns with your interests. Pay close attention to what content will be covered, how you will be graded, and who the professor is.

#5: Take advantage of electives

Electives offer an opportunity to explore new subjects and interests. Some schools hold a "general education" curriculum, in which all students are required to take classes from different fields to broaden their knowledge outside of their major. Adding electives to your schedule can help fulfill graduation requirements while also giving your brain a break from courses all of the same major.

What Extracurriculars Should I Join?

#1: Consider your interests and hobbies

Look into undergraduate clubs that align with your interests and passions. This will help you stay motivated and engaged in the activity. Look into club directories of specific fields to help narrow down the options.

#2: Look for leadership opportunities

Extracurricular activities are excellent pathways to foster leadership opportunities. This will help you develop valuable leadership skills and stand out on your resume. Research clubs' different leadership opportunities available and consider how it may align with your schedule.

#3: Balance your workload

Be mindful of your workload and choose extracurricular activities that fit into your schedule. It's important to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Extracurriculars are separate from academic life. Consider lower commitment activities for when you have a rigorous course schedule, and higher commitment clubs for when you have more free time.

#4: Explore new fields and interests

College is an excellent opportunity to try new things. Take advantage of this time to explore new interests and hobbies. Consult the club directory or ongoing club fairs to find new opportunities. Also reach out to friends or upperclassmen to help navigate which clubs they particularly enjoy.

#5: Get involved in the community

Consider volunteering or joining community service organizations. This will not only help you give back to your community, but it will also help you develop valuable skills and connections. Reaching out to community partners can be daunting, which is why finding undergraduate clubs that host volunteering events may be easier. However, you can also consider finding off-campus nonprofit organizations to get involved in. Consider reaching out to your school's advisors or campus life offices, if possible.

With a curated and balanced list of schools to apply to, you'll be all set to a successful college application process. The key is to thoroughly research each school, and demonstrate your interest in all of them in your applications. Best of luck!
