  • Evaluate communication strengths and areas for improvement while using Slack.

  • Learn about Slack and its many benefits.

  • Examine how Slack will enhance your growth as effective communicators and value creators.

  • Discuss how you will improve ineffective communication going forward by using 24/7 Teach’s four principles of communication.


 

3.1 24/7 Teach’s Four Principles of Communication

Effective Communication…

  • fosters a positive and productive work environment

  • contributes to a more dynamic, respectful, and effective workplace.

These Four Principles will enhance your interactions with colleagues and stakeholders.

    • use Slack to reach out promptly with questions and concerns.

    • waiting until the next day causes project delays.

    • respect the time of the other team members

    • if necessary, use Slack to reschedule a meeting- giving your leader at least 1 hour’s notice.

    • be transparent and reliable

    • own your actions and responsibilities

    • if you’re struggling with a task or can’t meet a deadline, use Slack to inform your team leader immediately.

    • by providing feedback

    • is essential for effective communication

    • build trust by at least 3 hours per week providing feedback on the assignments of your colleagues.

3.2 Communicating Via Slack

At 24/7 Teach, Slack is our main communication and collaboration tool. Slack organizes conversations by department into channels for various projects that your team may be working on, making it easy to follow and stay updated.

    …allow opportunities to quickly ask questions, get feedback, and offer suggestions. Slack keeps us connected and coordinated.

Problem: Your 24/7 Teach team has a presentation due on Saturday, and you had planned to use this week to prepare for it. But on Monday, your employer asks you to cover a couple extra shifts. You know there is no way you’ll be able to get everything done and you’re feeling overwhelmed.

3.3 Slack and 24/7 Email-Onboarding Tasks

Now that you have a clear understanding of Slack, it’s time to set it up.

Complete the following tasks below.

Slack Tasks

  • Click on the link your mentor provides you to download Slack app on your phone (and other work devices). 

  • Download the Slack app and enable notifications.

  • Add personal information to your Slack profile and

    • upload a picture

    • complete your bio. (Be sure to include your Superstar title.) 

  • Introduce yourself on the Welcome channel. (Click “Browse All Channels” and select the “#Welcome” and “#Announcements” channels to be added.)

  • Use your full name and Superstar title. (Your official title is based on your department: for example, Instructional Design Superstar.)

  • Describe your professional background and goals

Email Tasks

  • Send your picture and bio to Human Resources

  • Upload your professional photo to your 24/7 Gmail account.
