  • Differentiate between effective and ineffective feedback.

  • Understand the benefits of feedback.

  • Reflect on the importance of feedback in the mentoring relationship.

  • Practice implementing effective feedback.

6.1 Creating Quality Feedback

Many people associate the word feedback with negativity. They think that critiquing others, or having their own work critiqued, creates bad feelings for both the giver and receiver. Yet feedback provides an honest assessment of skills and areas of potential improvement and growth. With this in mind, let’s approach feedback the 24/7 Teach way.

4 Elements of Effective Feedback

  • The observation-based element of effective feedback is…

    • rooted in observation- to ensure fairness and accuracy.

    • factual, observable evidence.

    • not based on opinions or judgments.

  • The improvement-oriented element of effective feedback…

    • includes suggestions for what can be done for improvement.

    • promotes growth and development.

  • The specific element of effective feedback is…

    • clear and focused.

    • guiding learners to understand

      > what to change

      > how to change

      > why to change

  • The timely element of effective feedback…

    • allows learners to quickly understand how to improve.

    • maximizes the relevance and impact of feedback.

6.2 Effective Feedback is Actionable

A mentoring mindset can deepen a leader's impact by nurturing individual growth alongside team success. Giving actionable feedback is one of the most powerful tools a leader has in a mentoring relationship. Leaders that use effective feedback to mentor:

  • focus on personal development

  • tailor guidance to an individual's strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations

  • help create future leaders, ensuring a legacy of growth and adaptability

  • model how to handle feedback constructively in their own lives

5 Elements of Actionable Feedback

    • acknowledge positive aspects, highlight the best parts of the work

    • give detailed and precise descriptions of what was seen or experienced

    • focus on concrete actions, behaviors, or events without judgment

    Ineffective Feedback

    1. There were errors on your slides.

    2. I liked the way your project looked.

    Effective Feedback

    1. Your presentation slides have numerous spelling errors. The word build is misspelled, as well as the word constructive on the title page.

    2. Your visual design was excellent. All elements were balanced and you had good text to background contrast.

    • focus on a few critical areas for improvement

    • give clear guidance on where improvements can be made

    Ineffective Examples

    1. Make the lesson plans more organized.

    2. Write better.

    Effective Examples

    1. Ensure that step-by-step instructions are clear and comprehensive.

    2. Include more real-world examples to illustrate how these principles are used.

    • focus on tasks that can be changed

    • include practical advice for improvement

    • offer examples or steps to take

    Ineffective Feedback

    1. Maybe add more examples or something.

    2. Fix the mistakes.

    Effective Feedback

    1. Incorporating additional examples will enhance the clarity, credibility, and retention of your concepts for the learner.

    2. Create discussion prompts that encourage learners to reflect on how they can apply these outcomes in their own contexts.

    • highlight the benefits and rationale behind each suggestion

    • explain the positive impact it will have on learners

    Ineffective feedback

    1. You need to make sure you spell words correctly.

    2. Use active voice instead of passive voice.

    Effective feedback

    1. Correct spelling enhances professionalism and credibility.

    2. Active voice makes your writing more engaging and direct.

    • end with positive reinforcement

    • acknowledge the designer's efforts

    • express confidence that feedback implementation will result in a better product.

    Ineffective feedback

    1. You were consistent in your project, great job!

    2. Nice graphics

    Effective feedback

    1. Great job on maintaining consistent formatting in your presentation. This will help guide the learner and not increase cognitive load.

    2. Your use of visuals in the presentation helped me understand the concepts.

6.3 Benefits of Giving and Receiving Feedback Effectively

Pause & Reflect

Avery made a presentation at Thursday’s meeting and received this feedback from Cameron:

Your presentation today was very informative. For a more effective presentation, consider incorporating more visuals, such as charts and graphs, to illustrate key points. This will make the data more engaging and easier to understand. Also, varying your tone and pacing throughout the presentation can help maintain your audience’s interest. You’re off to a good start and making these improvements will take your presentation to the next level.

You received the following feedback from your mentor on your presentation:

“Your presentation was visually appealing and clear. While the content was appealing, the flow could be improved. There were a few instances where information seemed out of order. Rearranging these segments can help in creating a smoother narrative for your audience. Some of the technical terms were not clearly explained. Providing brief explanations for complex terms can ensure that all audience members, regardless of their background knowledge, can follow along more effectively. Also, the visuals certainly helped with understanding and complemented the content perfectly. This really helped in holding the audience's attention and making the material easily digestible.”

After reviewing the feedback, which aspect of your presentation was identified as a strength? Additionally, what are two specific changes you could make to enhance your presentation based on the feedback provided?
